Window types have evolved over time in terms of opening, height, sash pattern, and form; they were generally made of wood until the twentieth century, as aluminium and steel emerged as viable material possibilities. In ancient times, most home windows had apertures covered with masonry, woodwork, iron grills, or glass. Although the majority of current window designs are glazed or coated with an opaque or clear substance, just a few window designs employ transparent plastic.
